It seems like images and details about the new 2012 Chevy Camaro are popping up everywhere these days! Last month, the new Camaro was spotted undergoing test drives in Madison Heights, Michigan, which is about 13 miles north of GM headquarters and this month GM released two pictures of the car on their Facebook page, one of the front of the car and one of the back. The Kansas City used car dealer noticed one huge difference on the 2012 model that they are extremely excited about: the 2012 Chevy Camaro is a convertible! After many rumors that this model was going to be a convertible, these photos confirm that Camaro will have a electrically operated, simple cloth top that seems to emphasize the car’s raised rear haunch.
The photos also show the 2012 Chevy Camaro’s body mirrors the coupes’ with the same bodylines, headlights, and tailights. In the back the car will get dual exhaust, which the Overland Park Chevy dealership says is a big difference from other models that the Camero competes with. It is expected to be powered by the same 312hp 3.6 liter V6 as well as the 400hp and 426hp liter V8 found in the coupe. Compared to previous models of the Camaro, the 2012 version is said to have a repositioned third brake light, a trunk mounted radio antenna, and a key slot for the trunk. The Chevy is also said to be offered in the same three trims as the coupe version: the LS, LT, and SS.
Chevrolet headquarters tells the Kansas City used car dealer that they are expecting to sell roughly 20,000 Camaro convertibles in the first year. This sounds like a pretty impossible feat, but Chevy may have the edge over other automakers because the only convertible available in the class of muscle cars is the drop-top Ford Mustang.
We can expect more details about the 2012 Chevy Camaro to emerge over the next couple of months. The Camaro is said to enter production at GM’s Oshawa plant in Canada in the first quarter of 2011 and will be available to buy at the Overland Park Chevy in April of 2011.
